One of things I looked forward to the most during my engagement and wedding planning was going shopping to find my dream wedding dress. But with that comes a tough question: WHO should come with you to help you find the one?
I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been a big fan of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress… I would occasionally watch the show when there was nothing else on, and I didn’t want to watch it when I was in the midst of wedding dress shopping. However, when I did watch the show, I would notice that most brides would bring along their whole family, including their future in laws, and sometimes, even their husband to be!
Deciding who to take wedding dress shopping with you is all about assembling a team or in some cases, a single person, that will be SUPPORTIVE, ENCOURAGING, maybe a little creative, and above all RESPECTFUL of what you decide you really love. This can be a very difficult decision, but just know that having the right group of people by your side will make the experience that much more enjoyable for you and everyone who is a part of it.
Someone may want to join in the wedding dress shopping and the dress fitting in order to have first hand confirmation that the bride will look exactly as they have envisioned. Someone may also want to join to simply feel included in something that is so very important to the bride and the wedding planning.
The bride may want certain family members and/or friends with her for moral support. The pressure of picking that perfect dress can be pretty overwhelming, and having another set of eyes/opinions may provide a sense of comfort when things begin to get tough. However, this can also cause the bride stress if someone does not like the dress she loves and starts to create doubt and confusion for her.
In my case, I had a long engagement and I took my time looking for my wedding dress. I went numerous times with different family members and friends and sometimes, not all together. I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to share this special moment with me, whether or not I found my dress with them.
When I did say yes to the dress, I was with my mother. It was very unexpected and I didn’t expect to find my wedding dress that day… but I guess when you don’t expect, that’s when it happens, right?
With all that being said, I decided to keep my wedding dress a secret until the wedding day. Some family members and friends didn’t agree with this, but at the end of the day, it is ultimately up to the bride and groom to decide who and when the gown is seen. Whether it be the traditional kept secret or the modern group trip to the bridal shop.
Here are some blog posts and Youtube videos I shared about my wedding dress experience
But let’s face it ladies, no matter what you wear coming down that isle, everyone will be in awe at how beautiful you are no matter what colour, shape or style your wedding dress is!
How do you see it, should your wedding dress shopping experience/reveal be kept a surprise until the wedding day, or should you allow family and friends to be apart of it and see what it will look like before the big day?
