I can’t believe it was one year ago today when my sweet husband proposed to me. Time flies!!!! It feels like it was only yesterday. I wrote a blog post all about the Proposal Story so if you want to read all about it, you can click here – I’m Engaged!
This past Friday marked our 365 day mark down until our wedding… next year on Saturday September 22, 2018, we will be Mr and Mrs, husband and wife!!
We got engaged last September and we knew we wanted to get married in September 2018… I realized pretty quickly that a two year engagement sounded quite lengthly, but I also knew it would fly by. Fall 2018 seemed ages away to me last year, but here we are, just a year away!
Since we did get engaged with a two year engagement in mind, we did make sure to book our dates and venues early on to not worry about those things later on. So for the most part, everything is picked and booked included the photographer and videographer! So I mean, it’s nearly there right?!
So here’s what I’ve learnt so far about planning a wedding:
DO YOUR WEDDING YOUR WAY
As a bride, you will definitely feel the pressure of planning your wedding with the goal of impressing guests and/or following cultural traditions and customs. But here’s the truth: you won’t be able to impress everyone and a wedding isn’t a competition. Rather than starting your marriage in debt, why not set to a budget, keep your guest list at a number you can reasonably afford and do things YOU want to do?! Say no to the things you can’t afford or don’t want, even if everyone else says you need them.
EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE
Don’t underestimate how much a wedding costs. Set a realistic budget after visiting a few different venues and determine what is most important to you that you want to splurge on. For example, I LOVE photos and videos, so photography and videography are things I will be spending money on as they are extremely important to me.
TRYING ON WEDDING DRESSES ISN’T LIKE THE MOVIES
I have seen so many movies where the brides steps out in a wedding dress and everyone freaks out because she’s found “the one”… that’s not real and it doesn’t happen like that! Wedding dress shopping is like going normal shopping. Don’t get me wrong, it is special and it’s a wonderful time trying on wedding dresses… it’s just not always how it looks like in the movies.
RULES ARE TOTALLY THERE TO BREAK. TRADITION WHAT?
Of course there are traditions and customs that come with each culture, however, you can decided to continue with them, or do something new. Rules are there to be broken and in my mind, it’s my wedding day, so I will do whatever I’d like, whether it’s traditional or not. Who says the bride and groom cannot see each other before the ceremony? Who says you have to do the first dance at that time and you must cut the cake like that? It’s your wedding day, do what you want and don’t bother with what other people thing. If it makes you happy, then do it and be happy!
I never understood why brides would turn into “Bridezillas”, but there have been certain points throughout my engagement so far where I actually understood. Planning a wedding is a stressful job – from the buget, the invitations, band/dj, flowers, bridal shower, seating arrangements, etc. All of these thoughts and to-do’s will be on your mind and on your agenda until the minute you say “I do”. My biggest advice is when yo are feeling overwhelmed and stressed out, STOP PLANNING! Your wedding isn’t going anywhere and it won’t be destroyed because you took a day off from planning. Don’t let it overcome your life and consume all your days and energy – it’s not worth it. Take it day by day and stay positive. Your wedding day will be amazing, you’ve put too much work into it not to be!
So there you have it! Some things I’ve picked up from the wedding planning process so far. I’ll probably do some more wedding related posts throughout the year and one after the wedding, when I’m officially a wifey with all the knowledge about wedding planning!
Would love to hear about your wedding planning and any suggestions/advice you’d like to pass on!
