My number one piece of advice to staying organized is to create a to-do list. I am a huge fan of to-do lists and without one, I’d probably be lost, wandering around aimlessly not knowing what I should do next, while wasting precious time and feeling completely overwhelmed and anxious… not fun.
A to-do list can help us achieve our goals, both big and small – it is just a matter of knowing how to create a to-do list and how to use it! Not only can making a to-do list help you become more organized and productive, but it may also help free you from stress as I’m sure we all have a MILLION things running around in our heads every single day! With that being said, it is scientifically proven that having a million things floating around in your head actually causes you to function worse – maybe that’s why we may tend to forget where we were going, why we were going in that direction, etc. Brain farts, anyone?
Here are some tips and tricks I believe can help everyone create the ultimate to-do list:
~ Write Out your Goals
If you don’t already do this, now is the time to start – write out your goals for the day, for the week, for the month. Write down both personal and work-related goals. Ask yourself: What do you want to accomplish in your personal life? What do you want to achieve in your work life? Writing down your goals should be fun and inspiring!
~ Choose 2-3 Top Things to Accomplish Each Day
This may be hard to do, but it is essential if you want to actually accomplish anything! By narrowing down the number of tasks you need to accomplish will make it easier for you to focus on completing them. Everything else will be extra and if you do get around to completing others, you will feel extra productive… and that’ll feel really good.
~ Assign Certain Categories Per Day
This may not work for everyone, especially if you have a lot on your plate that you must finish ASAP! However, I find it is very useful to separate tasks into categories such as things that need to be accomplished today, tomorrow, next week, etc. It can serve as a reminder and may help plan yourself and your days better in order to accomplish the specific task(s) at hand.
~ Keep Your To-Do List Accessible to You
This shouldn’t be difficult to manage as there are so many fancy agendas and journals you can buy to organize your life. If you can’t be bother to buy one, you can always keep your to-do list on your computer, or even on your phone! TA-DA! There is a solution to everything, no excuses!
~Write Down ALL Tasks
While you may have chosen the top 2-3 tasks to accomplish, it is also very important to write down and include ALL tasks, even the small ones. While you may not get around to accomplishing everything, I believe that the more things you put on your list, the less things you will have running around in your head! It’s better out than in, right?!
~ Keep Updating
This is key. Stay on top of your to-do list. Your life is constantly changing, therefore, your to-do list should be changing along with it!
To-do lists are very delicate and if they are not created or used properly, they can actually hinder you instead of help you! Remember, a to-do list should free your mind while allowing yourself to review everything that needs to get done in order to achieve your goals.
