Spring cleaning never ends!
I started my spring cleaning last weekend and I still haven’t finished! It seems as though life always gets in the way and decluttering is surprisingly hard work!
I am determined to finish my spring cleaning this weekend, however, I find myself starting to declutter and organizing with the best of intentions, but then end up making excuses to keep items and putting them back where I found them… until I attempt to declutter again next time. Does anyone else feel this way?!
As I was thinking about this, I began writing down some questions to ask myself while I am decluttering and picking and choosing what goes and what stays.
Here are 10 Questions to ask yourself when decluttering:
1. Is this item something I use regularly?
If you haven’t used the item in the past year, toss it! This is a great question to ask when going through your wardrobe. It is important to consider how often you actually use each item when deciding whether it’s worth keeping or should be given away. If you haven’t touched it in three to six months (or more), despite your best intentions, it might be time to get rid of it.
2. If not, is it something I love?
If you don’t plan on using it, why are you still hanging onto it? One exception I would encourage you to make is for items you love. Keeping a painting a family member bought that you love even if it doesn’t have a place in your current home is much different than keeping a karaoke machine that doesn’t even work properly and have been meaning to fix for years.
3. Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation?
Chances are there is at least one thing in your home that you are keeping not because it is useful or you love, but because it was a gift from someone and you feel obligated to keep it. While I completely understand the desire the thought behind it, I think it is also important to remember that this is your home and if it is affecting your living space, it’s okay to declutter gifts as well as the things you’ve bought for yourself.
4. If I were shopping right now, would I buy this?
If you wouldn’t love the item and buy it if you saw it in a store now, why would you hang onto it? Only hold onto the items that you are sure you would purchase again.
5. Am I saving this item just in case?
I tend to use this as an excuse to keep items. I always think I will use it one day – “It would be great to use for a Halloween costume” or “It’s going to come back in style one day!”
6. Am I holding on to this item because I don’t want to waste money?
I have found myself using this excuse in the past. You might think that because you spent good money on something, you should hang onto it so that it doesn’t seem as though you are wasting money. Unfortunately, the money has already been wasted if you are holding onto the item so you don’t feel like it’s money down the drain. Try selling the item if it might still have a bit of value, it will help you feel a little better about the money you spent on it in the first place.
7. Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose?
There is absolutely no use in holding onto multiple items that do the exact same thing. Pick your favourite item and get rid of the rest!
8. Am I holding on to a broken item to fix one day?
If the item has been sitting around and it still hasn’t been fixed, chances are it’s just not going to happen! Either make an effort to fix it now or just get rid of it.
9. Does it fit me or my living space?
Our lifestyle changes as we move into different phases of life. If you are hanging onto an item and it doesn’t get used anymore given your life has moved in a different direction, then it’s time to part ways with it.
10. Could I use this space for something else?
Think of the possibilities of what you could do with a closet or storage area in your home if you weren’t holding onto everything that currently fills it. Your space has value too, and it’s important to look at the cost of everything you keep in terms of the space it occupies as well.
